Best Practices for Managing Bulk Items in Kits
Learn how to set up and manage bulk items within your kits to optimize your inventory and workflow.
Bulk items are essential for many projects, but managing them in kits can be a challenge. With Cheqroom, you can easily add bulk items like batteries, cables, or gaff tape to your kits, ensuring your team has everything they need in one place.
Setting Up Bulk Items in Kits
- Add Bulk Items Directly: You can add bulk items to a kit from the item overview page, the item detail screen, or the kit overview. This flexibility allows you to build kits efficiently, whether you're starting from scratch or modifying an existing kit.
- Create Versatile Kits: A single bulk item can belong to multiple kits simultaneously. This is useful for common items like AA batteries or power cables that are used across a wide range of kits.
Managing Inventory and Reservations
- Understand Item Allocation: When you book a kit, Cheqroom automatically reserves the bulk items that are part of that kit. If you book a bulk item directly from its item detail page, or if you add a bulk item to a booking without specifying a kit, the system will use the non-kitted quantity first. This ensures that the contents of your kits remain intact for when they're specifically needed.
- Adjust Quantities as Needed: Not every project requires the full quantity of a bulk item in a kit. You can decrease the quantity of a bulk item when creating a reservation or checking out a kit. If you need more than the kit's specified amount, you can easily add additional loose bulk items to your booking.
Handling Location and Custody
- Moving Bulk Items: When you move a bulk item to a new location, it's treated differently based on the quantity moved. If you move all of a bulk item to a new location, it remains a single bulk item. If you move only a portion of the quantity, the moved items are treated as a new bulk item at the new location. This behavior helps you maintain accurate location-based inventory counts.
- Location Transfers via Check-out: You can transfer bulk items between locations during a check-out, just like individual items. This is particularly useful for stocking remote offices or field production kits.
- Custody Limitations: At this time, you cannot assign custody of a bulk item directly to a user. If you assign a kit containing bulk items to a user, they will receive custody of all individual items within the kit, but not the bulk items. This is because bulk items are typically low-value consumables that are not individually tracked or returned.
