Troubleshooting RFID Scan Errors and Incomplete Readings

Getting incomplete scans or errors? Here's how to troubleshoot common RFID scanning issues

  • Check Your Scanner's Battery: A low battery can significantly impact your scanner's read range and performance. Make sure your device is fully charged before a large scanning task.
  • Scanning Technique: RFID works best when the tag is within the scanner's range and is not blocked by other items. For best results, sweep the scanner slowly and steadily over the items. Avoid a rapid motion. Make sure to get all sides of the items, especially if they are stacked or packed tightly.
  • Environmental Interference: Metals and liquids can interfere with RFID signals. If you're scanning items in a metal case or near liquids, you may need to adjust your approach. Try moving items away from metal surfaces or scanning them individually to ensure a clear signal.
  • Damaged Tags: Physically damaged tags may not be readable. If a specific item consistently fails to scan, check its tag for tears, creases, or other visible damage.
  • Too Many Tags: Scanning a large number of items in a very small area can sometimes overwhelm the scanner. If you're having trouble, try scanning smaller groups of items one at a time.
  • Re-associate the Tag: If all else fails, the tag may not be properly associated with the item in Cheqroom. Follow the steps in our article "How to Associate an RFID Tag with an Item" to re-link the tag.
